My Head Hurts - Causes and Treatment

A headache is pain that occurs in the head and upper neck region of the body. It can affect a small portion of the head, such as the eyes or temples, or it can affect the entire head. The pain may be sharp or dull, and may come along with a variety of other symptoms like light sensitivity or nausea. Whatever the specifics may be, headaches are extremely common.

Headache symptoms can vary between different people, but there are three main types:
- Tension Headache
- Migraine Headaches
- Cluster Headaches

  • Tension headaches are the most common type of primary headache. Tension-type headache can develop into chronic tension-type headache when it becomes more disabling. Tension headaches are caused by muscle tightening in the back of the neck and/or scalp, often triggered by emotional stress, fatigue, or depression. There are two classifications of tension headaches. Episodic tension type headaches occur randomly and less frequently. Chronic tension type headaches are daily or continuous headaches where the intensity of the pain may vary during a 24 hour cycle.
  • Migraine headaches are the second most common type of primary headache. An estimated 28 million people in the United States (about 12% of the population) will experience a migraine headache. Migraine headaches affect children as well as adults. Before puberty, boys and girls are affected equally by migraine headaches, but after puberty, more women than men are affected.
Migraines are extremely painful, recurring headaches that are sometimes accompanied by other symptoms such as visual disturbances -- seeing an aura -- or nausea. There are two types of migraine -- migraine with aura, formerly called common migraines, and migraine without aura, formerly called classic migraines.
If you have a migraine with aura, you may see things such as stars or zigzag lines or have a temporary blind spot about 30 minutes before the headache starts. Even if you don't experience an aura, you may have other warning signs in the period before the headaches starts, such as a craving for sweets, thirst, sleepiness, or depression.
  • Cluster headaches Cluster headaches consist of attacks of severe one-sided pain in the head. It is sometimes called migrainous neuralgia. Each attack develops suddenly, usually without any warning. Typically, you feel the pain mainly in or around one eye or temple. The pain may spread to other areas on the same side of the head. The pain is sometimes described as burning or boring. Each attack lasts 15-180 minutes, but most commonly 45-90 minutes. Attacks may occur from once every two days to eight times a day. Cluster headache are a rare type of primary headache affecting 0.1% of the population (1 in a 1,000 people). It more commonly affects men in their late 20s though women and children can also suffer these types of headache

Headache Cause:
The causes of tension headaches can vary, but most common is tight muscles within the upper back, neck and base of the skull. This tightness can be a result of anxiety, defective posture, sleeping in a position that bends the neck, overexertion, fatigue, fearful thoughts about potential future events or circumstances, low self esteem, lack of sleep, encounters with others that generate negative emotions, unfulfilled expectations, unsatisfying relationships and lack of close positive relationships, and separation from loved ones. Chronic headaches can occasionally be traced to over- or under-treatment of a primary headache.
Other lifestyle causes include smoking, overindulging in drugs or alcohol, sinus infections, and withdrawal from nicotine or caffeine.

Headache Treatment:
Pain-reducing medications, massage and chiropractic adjustments are common treatments for back pain. At Power Massage, we use a form of neuro-muscular reeducation and by working with our clients, together we can achieve immediate results that have been unavailable before. We do this by reducing muscle inflammation and elongating the muscles which gives us the results your looking for.
Not all massage is the same. The neuro-muscular technique used by our staff of professional therapists has been very effective for many of our patients.
